I was moved by watching the news at lunchtime today when I saw the items featuring the Spanish women’s strike today and I have to say my reaction was ‘good on you’… about time really. It’s one of the many things I like about living in Spain, they protest when they think there is injustice (they are not on their own of course but it’s where I live!). And their comments included the fact that they can’t believe pay inequality and inequality in general is still so prevalent in the 21st century, but it is. When I first came to live here I can remember our builder (a lovely man who I count on as a friend now) but when we were refurbishing our house he asked me about some change he thought might be best, and I said yes of course, go ahead, then he checked with my husband later that it was really ok… I get that on all sorts of levels with the benefit of living here for some years, but at the time I was surprised, to say the least! But the main point of this blog is to celebrate some of the amazing women I have come across during my time here. Julia of course and her mega challenge, what a remarkable thing to take on, 1000+ kilometres is a long way to run, barefoot… Maricarmen my Spanish teacher over the years who is one of the most serene, dignified and gracious women put on this earth. I wish I could be as cool! My darling friend Helen who lives in Iraq and has a life of uncertainty and fear. Rachel, mega business woman… There are lots of others,
I could fill a page naming the remarkable women I know. So that’s it. On with the work because unlike some of the other women in Spain today I can’t strike as I have a deadline to meet! 18th March is getting mighty close. Bring it on. My photos today are of a wild storm on a beach in Galicia, which I love, and the other of me and my darling dog Cass, who died a month ago. Love and miss her.
After living in Spain for a number of years and travelling a lot within Spain on holiday, we were very fortunate to spend two months travelling from Suances on the north coast to Almunecar on the south coast this year, taking two months to see the landscape. This is our tale and what happened afterwards back in our “normal” life…
